What will I learn?

Guidance and Counselling is a process of helping people to discover and develop their educational, career, and psychological potentialities and thereby to attain an optimal level of personal happiness and social usefulness.

The Bachelor of Social Science (Hons) Guidance and Counseling programme aims to equip students with the comprehensive professional knowledge and skills for managing various psychological issues such as developmental challenges, behavioral difficulties, socioemotional distress and psychological stress from critical events and work. Students will be trained to work towards improving people's psychological well-being and achieving their full potential.

The Faculty of Arts and Social Science is operating the UTAR Community Counseling Centre all year round. Students have extensive opportunities to observe and assist licensed counselors and clinical psychologists in managing a wide range of clients. The curriculum of this programme is designed above and beyond the Malaysian Board of Counselor’s Standards and Requirements of Training for Counselors. The programme aspires to produce highly competent and ethical professional counselors.

Career Prospects

Graduates are expected to register with the Board of Counselors Malaysia, and can seek employment in education, health, training, sports, welfare support, consultancy and public relations, human resource management and research.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

UTAR welcomes applicants with any of the following qualifications for entry to Bachelor's Honours Degree Programme: Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM); Unified Examination Certificate (UEC); A-Levels; South Australian Matriculation (SAM); Canadian Pre-University (CPU). Entry with Other Qualifications: Applicants with qualifications other than those described above, for example, a Diploma from a college/institution/polytechnic may also apply for admission to UTAR programmes. English Language Requirements: International English Language Testing System ( IELTS ): 5.0; Internet-based Testing (IBT) TOEFL: 42; Cambridge English: 154; Pearson Test of English (PTE): 47; Malaysia University English Test (MUET): Band 3.

For international students

Students must have A-Level with 2-3 passes in the relevant subjects or high school leaving examination equivalent with 5 passes.

They also must have the following minimum score are as follows:


TOEFL iBT - 42

Cambridge English: Advance (CAE) – 154

Pearson Test of English (PTE) – 47

Malaysia University English Test (MUET): Band 3
