What will I learn?

The Master of Medical Science by Research is a broad-based postgraduate degree designed to allow students to pursue research topics in a range of areas and disciplines within the scope of Medical Science.

The program aspires to nurture compassionate physicians and scientists who are not only educated to exhibit high ethical principles and technical skills, but are committed to the care and well-being of those in need.


The programme enables candidates to acquire the ability to think analytically and have a good understanding of his/her chosen field of study. At the same time, the candidate will have the opportunity to be involved in significant research. As projects are likely to be multidisciplinary, the candidate will be exposed to a range of techniques and be able to interact with scientists from many disciplines.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Preference will be given to applicants having a Bachelor’s Degree with CGPA 3.0 and above or its equivalent. A band 5.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Academic); or A score of 550 paper based total, a score of 213 for computer-based total or a score of 80 for internet-based total for Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

For international students

Students must have Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery or the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery of the University; or the Bachelor of Science in the relevant field of the University and a CGPA of not less than 3.0 (or its equivalent); or an equivalent qualification approved by the Senate from time to time.

A non-Malaysian applicant whose degree is from a university or institution of higher learning where the medium of instruction for that degree is not the English language shall be required:

To obtain a score of 600 for a paper-based total (PBT); a score of 250 for a computer-based total (CBT) or a score of 100 for an internet-based total (IBT) for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or

To obtain a band of 6 for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Academic).
