What will I learn?

This field involves multidisciplinary approaches to advance knowledge and practice of anesthesia and analgesia. Areas of study include investigations into the foundation of anesthesia and analgesia, including cellular biology, mechanisms and actions of various an aesthetic and analgesic modalities, modeling of compounds, apparatus and modalities related to anesthesia and analgesia. Studies can also be conducted on interactions of various anesthetic and analgesic modalities on the integrated biological systems encompassing the nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, gastrointestinal, and muscular systems. Methods of patient monitoring such as temperature, ECG, invasive and non-invasive blood pressure, oximetry, cardiac output and respiratory gas analysis can be investigated for adaptation to veterinary practices. Innovations can be made in respiratory, hemodynamic and neurophysiological methodologies, including pain quantification in the clinical setting for improvement of patient care and safety.
