What will I learn?

This field focuses on principles of the 5 domains of animal welfare; nutritional, environmental, health, behavioral and mental. The core of the specialization is identification, investigation, evaluation, proposal and management of animal welfare issues using indices of deprivation in the domains stated above. Research in this field includes effect of stressful and nonconductive environment on the physiology, reproduction, behavior, longevity, disease susceptible and resistances on animals. Candidates may also conduct studies to develop blood, physiological and physical profiles for determination of cruelty to animals. Other potential studies include welfare of wildlife by assessing the behavior, environment, adaption and survival in captivity.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

The applicant should possess a Bachelor’s degree (with honours) in a relevant field with a minimum CGPA of 3.000, or the applicant without sufficient academic qualification can be admitted into the programme subject to any other requirement specified by the Faculty/Institute. An applicant from a local public university who is in the final semester of his undergraduate study programme may be considered for provisional admission provided his current CGPA or its equivalent satisfies the graduate programme admission requirements. English Language Requirements: International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) Band 6.0; Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL), Paper Based - 550; 400 for Band 4.0 only for Malay language, Arabic, Chinese Literature, internet-based test (IBT)- 79-80.

For international students

Candidate must have a Bachelor degree (with honours), or DVM or Bachelor of Science degree in related field from UPM or any academic institution recognised by UPM university and have achieved a minimum CGPA of 3.00

Candidate without basic requirements may apply, however, acceptance is upon approval by the School of Graduate Studies and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, UPM or;

Candidate in the final semester of a Bachelor degree programme in the field of veterinary, animal, or health science or human medicine or other related fields with good academic standing throughout the study programme may be considered for admission, subject to current CGPA or equivalent or other requirement as stipulated from time to time

Candidate has fulfilled the language requirement as stipulated by UPM
