About Faculty

Faculty of Design and Architecture conducts Master of Science programs (by research) in several fields of studies including Landscape Studies, Architectural Studies, Urban Planning and Design, Integrated Design Studies and Industrial Design Studies.

Master of Science (by research) students will be supervised by a supervisory committee comprising experts in the field of study chosen by students. Faculty of Design and Architecture has many academic staff with PhD qualifications and experience in supervising Master's students. The Faculty also has its own library shared with Faculty of Engineering (Engineering and Architecture Library).

Master of Science Graduates have career opportunities in educational institutions such as polytechnics, government and private colleges as well as in research institutions. Most graduates continue their studies to Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

Urban Planning and Design covers processes and principles that support sustainable urban and regional planning. Studies on urban planning and design include planning and design of urban and rural areas, policies, economics, housing, environment, social, recreational, transportation, local image and identity, place attachment, psychology, technology, urban geography, cultural theory and land assets in urban areas with various scales and functions.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

The applicant should possess a Bachelor’s degree (with honours) in a relevant field with a minimum CGPA of 3.000, or the applicant without sufficient academic qualification can be admitted into the programme subject to any other requirement specified by the Faculty/Institute. An applicant from a local public university who is in the final semester of his undergraduate study programme may be considered for provisional admission provided his current CGPA or its equivalent satisfies the graduate programme admission requirements. English Language Requirements: International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) Band 6.0; Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL), Paper Based - 550; 400 for Band 4.0 only for Malay language, Arabic, Chinese Literature, internet-based test (IBT)- 79-80.

For international students

Applicants must have

  • Bachelor Degree in Built Environment, Property or equivalent in related field
  • Minimum CGPA of 2.50 or working experience for at least 1 year in related field.

For applicants with one of the following

550 for the TOEFL Paper-based Test (Academic Version); or

Band 6.0 for IELTS (Academic Training); or

79-80 for TOEFL Internet-based Test (Academic Version); or

Level 109 for CIEP at ELS Language Centre; or

Any English Language Test which is equivalent to B2 in Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
