What will I learn?

Masters of Psychological Medicine is a 4-year clinical program under the Faculty of Medicine which provides psychiatric specialist training in Malaysia.

Objectives

At the end of the course the candidate shall demonstrate:

Thorough knowledge in the field of psychiatry and adequate knowledge in the psychiatric sub-specialties.

Broad knowledge in the fields of psychopathology aspects of etiology, symptomatology, treatment and management.

Ability to take a detailed history, and in carrying out physical and mental state examinations.

Ability to conduct appropriate investigations.

Leadership skills and cooperate with other staff like the clinical psychologist, medical social worker, occupational therapist and others.

Good attitudes and a sense of responsibility while discussing with colleagues and while treating patients.

Good skill in handling discussions and in communicating with patients or their family members.

Capacity to continue acquiring current knowledge in psychiatry and in keeping abreast of latest developments in the field of medicine in general.

Ability to undertake research activities in psychiatry.

Ability to function as a psychiatrist, who is efficient in raising the levels of expertise,

Practice and mental health standard in the society.

Career Opportunity

After completion of the course, a candidate shall be gazette/credentialed under a consultant psychiatrist supervision to be certified as a clinical psychiatrist in Malaysia.

Entry requirements

For international students

(a) The degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of the University or an equivalent medical qualification approved by the Senate; and

(b) At least one year of post-full registration clinical experience approved by the Senate.

(2) Other requirements

(a) Qualifies for registration as a medical practitioner under the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia; and

(b) Satisfies the Department responsible for the candidate’s programme of study in an Entrance Evaluation recognized by the Faculty.

To obtain a score of 600 for a paper-based total (PBT); a score of 250 for a computer-based total (CBT) or a score of 100 for an internet-based total (IBT) for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or

To obtain a band of 6 for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

*There may be different IELTS requirements depending on your chosen course.
