What will I learn?

The food production network is a very complex system in which the risk of hazards from foods is real. Therefore, the use and application of higher technical expertise is necessary in the food industry. The food industry is now adopting the farm-to-table food safety approach. There is an increased need for experts in food safety who are able to carry out monitoring and evaluation of microbiological, chemical and physical parameters for product safety. Studies in this field equip students with the relevant theories and technical knowledge to conduct research in the area of food safety. The student will be able to understand in more detail issues that include pathogen, chemical hazards, and GMO related to food safety. Students will be exposed to the latest information related to the status, determination and effect of processing, as well as the application of HACCP quality management and risk assessment of specific foods.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

The applicant should possess: a Master Degree (with coursework) in a relevant field with a minimum grade average of B, or a Master Degree with thesis in a relevant field, or an outstanding Bachelor’s degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.750 (such an applicant may apply direct admission even without a Master Degree). Admission into the programme is subject to any other requirement specified by the Faculty/Institute. An applicant from a local public university who is in the final semester of his undergraduate study programme may be considered for provisional admission provided his current CGPA or its equivalent satisfies the graduate programme admission requirements. English Language Requirements: International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) Band 6.0; Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL), Paper Based - 550; 400 for Band 4.0 only for Malay language, Arabic, Chinese Literature, internet-based test (IBT)- 79-80.

For international students

An applicant with good achievement in Master Science from UPM or other institutions that qualified by UPM. An applicant with an outstanding Bachelor’s degree with CGPA 3.75 and above or equivalent to first class honours also can apply for direct admission into PhD degree programme, but with condition. An applicant must pass one year of attempt admission.

For applicants with one of the following

550 for the TOEFL Paper-based Test (Academic Version); or

Band 6.0 for IELTS (Academic Training); or

79-80 for TOEFL Internet-based Test (Academic Version); or

Level 109 for CIEP at ELS Language Centre; or

Any English Language Test which is equivalent to B2 in Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
