About Faculty

Faculty of Design and Architecture conducts Doctor of Philosophy programs (by research) in several fields of studies including Landscape Studies, Architectural Studies, Urban Planning and Design, Integrated Design Studies and Industrial Design Studies.

Doctor of Philosophy (by research) students will be supervised by a supervisory committee comprising experts in the field of study chosen by students. Faculty of Design and Architecture has many academic staff with PhD qualifications and experience in supervising PhD's students. The Faculty also has its own library shared with Faculty of Engineering (Engineering and Architecture Library).

PhD Graduates get career opportunities at higher learning institutions, other educational institutions, research institutions, as well as senior positions in government departments as well as private.

Integrated Design Studies aims to create sustainable use of natural resources at all phases of the product design cycle. Researches cover theories and applications of collaborative design using IT/ICT, visualization and design media, virtual design, Building Information Model (BIM), integrated design and green product development to support the sustainable built environment.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

The applicant should possess: a Master Degree (with coursework) in a relevant field with a minimum grade average of B, or a Master Degree with thesis in a relevant field, or an outstanding Bachelor’s degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.750 (such an applicant may apply direct admission even without a Master Degree). Admission into the programme is subject to any other requirement specified by the Faculty/Institute. An applicant from a local public university who is in the final semester of his undergraduate study programme may be considered for provisional admission provided his current CGPA or its equivalent satisfies the graduate programme admission requirements. English Language Requirements: International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) Band 6.0; Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL), Paper Based - 550; 400 for Band 4.0 only for Malay language, Arabic, Chinese Literature, internet-based test (IBT)- 79-80.

For international students

Applicants must have master in built environment, property, industrial Design, fine arts or equivalent in related field.

For applicants with one of the following

550 for the TOEFL Paper-based Test (Academic Version); or

Band 6.0 for IELTS (Academic Training); or

79-80 for TOEFL Internet-based Test (Academic Version); or

Level 109 for CIEP at ELS Language Centre; or

Any English Language Test which is equivalent to B2 in Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
