What will I learn?

Nowadays, the arts and media are inextricably connected to the society in which we live. The Arts, Media and Society bachelor’s programme will take you on an enlightening journey during which you’ll explore the issues in society we currently face from the perspectives of the arts and the media.

Why study Arts, Media and Society?

By providing a unique view on complex issues, art plays a distinct and highly relevant role in today’s society. It is also an indispensable force for good in any democratic society. In the Arts, Media and Society bachelor’s programme you’ll see how contemporary art engages with society about global issues, such as terrorism, biotechnology, ecology, and politics. You’ll also learn how art, film, photography and digital media are shaping our society and how the arts and media can help provide strategies for social and political activism.

Why Arts, Media and Society at Leiden University?

  • It’s a small-scale, highly international programme taught in English and linked to Leiden University’s globally acclaimed bachelor’s programme in Art History.
  • You will be based in the beautiful city of Leiden, close to great contemporary museums and media institutions in Leiden, Amsterdam and Rotterdam.

After graduation

In an interconnected global environment, the Bachelor in Arts, Media and Society meets a new market need: for multidisciplinary, digitally-fluent, international talent with a broad understanding of the impact and influence of the arts on society.

What are your skills after graduation?

After graduating from the Arts, Media and Society bachelor’s programme you will have a multidisciplinary understanding of the influence and impact that the arts and media have on society. You will also have acquired the academic and professional skills that will be indispensable to your future career or study. The programme will prepare to kick start your career in areas like curating, consulting, (digital) publishing or arts journalism, or to further your academic education with a suitable master’s degree.

Your career prospects

Graduates of the programme who want to further their academic education can continue with a master’s programme. Having successfully completed a master’s you will have earned the title Master of Arts (MA), which will significantly increase your chances of finding a position at academic level.

Entry requirements

For international students

An equivalent of a Dutch pre-university education (VWO) diploma.

Leiden University accepts three kinds of official tests:

  • The International English Language Testing System (IELTS), academic modules only. Minimum score of 6.5 overall. A minimum score of 6.0 is required for the components ‘reading’ and ‘listening’. A minimum score of 6.5 is required for the components ‘writing’ and ‘speaking’.
  • The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Minimum score of 90 overall (internet based). A minimum score of 20 is required for the components ‘reading’ and ‘listening’. A minimum score of 22 is required for the components ‘writing’ and ‘speaking’.
  • Cambridge C2 Proficiency / Cambridge C1 Advanced 180 (grade A-C). A minimum score of 169 is required for the components ‘reading’ and ‘listening’. A minimum score of 176 is required for the components ‘writing’ and ‘speaking’.
