What will I learn?

Are you fascinated by the political, technological, cultural, and ecological challenges that dominate the headlines? Do you want to study the concepts and ideas behind those challenges? Are you interested in how our thinking about the world helps shape the world? If you are fascinated by the ideas that determine the course of humanity, then Philosophy, Politics and Society might be the perfect fit for you.

What will you learn?

The first year of the PPS bachelor consists of introductory courses that familiarize you with the fundamental concepts, methods, and problems of philosophy. This prepares you for the second and third year of PPS, which is unique in its issue-oriented approach. You choose up to six thematic modules that focus on the philosophical analysis of major societal challenges. These modules cover topics such as the future of democracy, digital technology, global justice and human rights, and the advent of the Anthropocene.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

International educational qualifications: If you have a non-Dutch Secondary School degree, your previous education will be assessed by the Admissions Officer of the Faculty of Science to determine whether it is of sufficient level. If the level is sufficient, then you could be directly admissible or additional conditions may apply (such as taking an English or Mathematics test). For accepted English tests, have a look at the language requirements. For Computing Science, you can prove your English language proficiency by obtaining one of the following diplomas: A Dutch VWO diploma; An International Baccalaureate Diploma (diploma programme), A European Baccalaureate Diploma, with English Language 2 or English Language 1, GCE A-Levels, A diploma equivalent to, or higher than the Dutch VWO diploma, with English as the only language of instruction, obtained at an institution in an EU/EEA member state, Australia, Canada (excluding Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States of America. IELTS Academic, overall-score 6.5, sub-scores 6.0, TOEFL iBT, overall-score 90, sub-scores 20, Cambridge English Qualifications: C1 Advanced (CAE) or C2 Proficiency (CPE), scores C.

For international students

If you have completed, or are about to complete, a study programme outside of the Netherlands, then your diploma will be assessed on an individual basis. Depending on your diploma, you may receive requests for further information during the application procedure.

To study PPS, you need to be proficient in English. To prove that your English is sufficient, you must have one of the following:

A Dutch VWO diploma;
An International Baccalaureate Diploma (diploma programme)
A European Baccalaureate Diploma, with English Language 2 or English Language 1
An American High School Diploma
GCE A-Levels
A diploma equivalent to, or higher than the Dutch VWO diploma, where the language of instruction has been English, obtained at an institution in an EU/EEA member state, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the United States of America.

  • a (Test of English as a Foreign Language) iBT with a total score of ≥90, all four sub-scores ≥20;
  • (International English Language Testing System) with an overall score of ≥6.5, all four sub-scores ≥6.0;
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 proficiency, with mark ≥C.

Application Deadline: Non-EU/EEA students - 1 April; EU/EEA students - 1 May (recommended deadline for assistance with finding housing) and 1 July (final application deadline).
