What will I learn?

Increasing globalization and regional integration creates the need for good knowledge of international commercial law.

And this knowledge is especially important if you wish to enter a career in the field of international private law and when you are planning on becoming a lawyer working in internationally operating private firms or law firms.

This LLM programme covers:

  • Specialization in (international) commercial law, especially with regard to contracts and subjects of contracts.
  • The solving of (commercial) disputes when needed.

Why study this programme in Groningen?

This programme has a focus on private law and international aspects of private (international) law. There is a possibility to write an article for publication within the programme (usually linked to the writing of the Master's thesis).

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have Bachelor's degree. Additional requirements English: A VWO diploma or a subject certificate for VWO English (mark 6 or higher), minimum requirement of TOEFL iBT 90 (with a minimum of 21 on all items), or IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 6 on all items). Language Centre English Test (LCET) level C1 (B2 for no more than two components). Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with a minimum score of 180.

For international students

Students must have a LLB or equivalent.

Knowledge minimum: basic knowledge of private law and elementary knowledge of European Law and public international law

Grade average: GPA equivalent to 7/10 (Dutch grading scale)

If you are not a native speaker of English, you will need to provide proof of English language proficiency:

Native speakers of English may request exemption from providing proof of proficiency. Otherwise you will need to provide proof of English language proficiency:

  • TOEFL: 100 (all sections need to be at least 21; the writing section needs to be at least 23)
  • IELTS: 7 (all sections need to be at least 6.0; the writing section needs to be at least 6.5)
  • Cambridge C2 Proficiency (CPE, Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English);
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE, Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English)
  • Applicants who are taking/have completed an English-taught bachelor programme at a Dutch research university may be exempt from taking an English proficiency test.
