What will I learn?

Sustainable Energy Technology includes renewable energy sources (such as solar energy, wind energy, and energy from biomass) and technologies designed to improve energy efficiency. A transition to a society based Sustainable Energy is necessary to be self-sufficient, meet the growing global demand for energy, and address the threat of climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions. This transition will require fundamental innovations affecting the world’s energy landscape.

Securing a sustainable energy future implies an energy transition that will require a new generation of dedicated engineers and researchers capable of developing, optimising, and integrating sustainable energy sources including solar power, wind power, and energy from biomass. Because of the intermittency of these sources storage of energy is an important factor for success. This requires innovative batteries and research into hydrogen as an energy source. New technologies need to be integrated into existing power networks and market structures. The design of new forms of energy distribution, energy market structures, and smart grids is necessary to satisfy the energy needs of modern societies.

System integrators of the energy transition

Engineers in Sustainable Energy Technology have a broad knowledge of the field and can act as the system integrators of the energy transition. They can bring together different energy subsystems into one system. Their engineering skills include renewable energy generation, distribution systems, and storage. In addition they can integrate systems that can manage the fluctuating energy supply and demand. They are also aware of the challenges of the energy market and innovation management. There is a lot of demand for engineers in this field, because governments and industry have ambitious plans for investments in sustainable energy.

Career Prospects

Recent Sustainable Energy Technology (SET) graduates have found positions in companies, universities government, and non-governmental organisations.


Our alumni find work in sustainable energy technology companies, like Shiroi energy (solar energy), Eneco (energy), ECN (wind energy), Apex (heat exchangers), Sunraid (solar thermal industry), BMC Moerdijk (energy from biomass), XEMC Darwind (wind turbine design).

They also find work in companies like Shell, Tebodin, Siemens, Dutch Railways or work for consultancy companies like Ernst & Young and Witteveen + Bos. A few of our alumni started their own company or work for start-ups in the area of sustainable energy.

Applicants must have A good university Bachelor's degree in a main subject closely related to the MSc programme to which you are applying, with good grades on the key courses or A proof that you have nearly completed a Bachelor's programme in a main subject which is closely related to the MSc programme to which you are applying, with good grades on the key courses; Proof of English language proficiency.

For international students

Admission to the MSc programme in Sustainable Energy Technology depends on your educational background. The Sustainable Energy Technology Master has a strong focus on technology and engineering. The programme welcomes students with a Bachelor in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, and Aerospace Engineering, and (Applied) Physics.

A TOEFL iBT with an overall band score of at least 90 and a minimum score of 21 for each section.

An IELTS (academic version) with an overall Band score of at least 6.5 and a minimum of 6.0 for each section.

A Cambridge Assessment English. Only the following certificates are accepted:

C1 Advanced (Certificate of Advanced English) with an overall score of 176 and a minimum of 169 for each section.

C2 Proficiency (Certificate of Proficiency in English) with an overall score of 180 and a minimum of 169 for each section
