Geographic Information Systems

Geographic Information Systems looks at how spatial information (data detailing the topographical position of objects), is captured, integrated, modeled and visualized. This includes areas such as satellite remote sensing, photographic techniques and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) along with information science.

200-level

  • INFO 201 Developing Information Systems 1
  • INFO 202 Developing Information Systems 2
  • SURV 208 Introduction to Geographic Information Systems
  • At least one 200-level GEOG or SURV paper

Above 200-level

  • SURV 309 Introduction to Remote Sensing Technologies
  • SURV 319 Spatial Analysis and Programming
  • SURV 411 Spatial Analysis and Modelling
  • At least one further 300-level GEOG or SURV paper

Plus 126 further points, including either requirements for an approved minor or approved second major subject or other approved papers.

Bachelor of Applied Science with Honours (BAppSc(Hons)) is also available.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

English language requirements: IELTS score of 6.0 in the academic module (with no individual band below 6.0); Internet-based TOEFL - Score of 80 (writing 20); Paper-based TOEFL - Score of 550 (TWE 4.5); Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) - Overall score of 176 (with no individual band below 169); Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) - Overall score of 176 (with no individual band below 169); Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic - Overall score of 58 with no communicative skills score below 50.

For international students

The minimum requirement for students is the completion of a high school qualification plus satisfactory completion of one year's study at an approved tertiary institution or successful completion of New Zealand Foundation Year programme.

We also accept the following International qualifications: International Baccalaureate: IB Diploma with a minimum of 24 points; GCE Advanced Levels: minimum grade of 8.
