What is it Like?

The Bachelor of Aviation Management (BAvMan) is a dedicated aviation qualification which will introduce you various aspects of the exciting aviation industry. If you have a passion for aviation, you enjoy working with other people, you are interested in working towards a management role in a global business, then this degree is for you.

You will gain an understanding of the human factors in aviation, airline strategic management, and airport operational management as well as have the opportunity to undertake an internship course (aviation practicum)

Topics include aviation human factors, aviation security issues, airlines strategic management and legal issues in aviation. These topics will expand the range of careers open to you in the aviation industry.

This degree is suitable if you are wanting to enter the aviation industry, or if you are already in the industry but wish to gain a tertiary qualification to help your career path. Note some professional aviation qualifications may be eligible for cross-credit into the degree.

With a BAvMan degree you will have access to a wide range of career options in aviation-related industries. Potential employers include:

  • SITA - the world’s leading specialist in air transport communications and information technology
  • Menzies Aviation - a global provider of passenger, ramp and cargo handling services (in 31 countries with over 19,000 staff!)
  • Airways New Zealand
  • New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority - regulates civil aviation in New Zealand
  • Airlines and airports

These companies will be interested in your knowledge of aviation and management - a perfect combination in roles such as airfield officer, terminal duty managers, retail and terminal operations management, compliance, air accident investigation, customer service, sales and marketing and much more.

Bachelor of Aviation Management structure

To complete a Bachelor of Aviation Management the following is required:

  • Total of 360 credits completed. That’s 24 courses of 15 credits each
  • At least 270 credits (18 courses) completed from the BAvMan Compulsory and Aviation elective courses from Schedules A and B

Made up of:

  • 150 credits (10 courses) completed from BAvMan Schedule A: Compulsory courses
  • 120 credits (8 courses) of Aviation elective courses completed from BAvMan Schedule B (Of which a minimum of 30 credits must be at 300 level)
  • A maximum of 90 credits completed from additional BAvMan Schedule B Aviation electives, or from schedules of any other undergraduate degrees offered at Massey.
  • Of the 360 total BAvMan programme credits, 75 credits or more must be from 300-level courses
  • Up to 135 credits (9 courses) may be completed at 100 level

Entry requirements

For international students

Students must have successful completion of a qualification equivalent to the New Zealand Year 13 - NCEA Level 3 University Entrance. International students need to check the equivalency of their secondary school qualification by reviewing the Academic Admission Requirements by Country.

Students from a country where English is not the first language, must obtain a minimum English Language competency level.

  • IELTS score of 6.0 (no band less than 5.5)
  • TOEFL iBT score of 80 overall (min 19 in Writing)
  • PTE Academic score of 50 Overall (min 42 in communicative skills)
  • Cambridge English score of 169 overall and all bands 162 or better
