What is it like?

Massey University’s Bachelor of Science (Data Science) will teach you how to make sense of complexities so others can easily understand them. You will learn how to apply computing to data-oriented challenges.

A foundation in science

The Bachelor of Science gives you a broad science foundation.

You will be able to take advantage of Massey’s expertise across a broad range of sciences disciplines. If you are interested in natural and fundamental sciences, you can choose to complete a double major/minor combination including chemistry, biology, genetics or physics. These are also areas where computational and data processing skills are becoming increasingly important.

Similarly, you may choose data science with a minor from any of the offerings under business, health, creative arts or humanities and social sciences.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

English Language Requirements: IELTS - 6.0 (no band less than 5.5); TOEFL iBT- 80 overall (min 19 in Writing); PTE Academic - 50 Overall (min 42 in communicative skills); Cambridge English - 170.

For international students

Students must have successful completion of a qualification equivalent to the New Zealand Year 13 - NCEA Level 3 University Entrance. International students need to check the equivalency of their secondary school qualification by reviewing the Academic Admission Requirements by Country.

It is strongly recommended (but not compulsory) that students beginning their study in Data Science have a sound background in mathematics at NCEA Level 3 (or equivalent).

Students from a country where English is not the first language, must obtain a minimum English Language competency level.

  • IELTS score of 6.0 (no band less than 5.5)
  • TOEFL iBT score of 80 overall (min 19 in Writing)
  • PTE Academic score of 50 Overall (min 42 in communicative skills)
  • Cambridge English score of 169 overall and all bands 162 or better
