What will I learn?

The Certificate of University Preparation will help you reach the standards you need to start studying towards a university qualification.

Why do the Certificate of University Preparation?

If you narrowly missed gaining the academic requirements for admission to University, or are over 20 and have been out of study for some time, you can apply to enrol in the Certificate of University Preparation. Successful completion of this one-semester qualification will give you admission to University and prepare you for undergraduate study.

The programme is suitable for both domestic and international students. Students from non-English speaking backgrounds must have good English language skills. If you have qualifications other than those listed in Massey University’s entrance requirements, you are welcome to apply for entry and your eligibility will be assessed.

On successful completion of the Certificate you will be eligible for admission to unrestricted undergraduate programmes at Massey University and other New Zealand universities.

Planning overview

The Certificate of University Preparation is comprised of four 15-credit courses, two of which are compulsory and focus on academic study and research skills. You choose two courses from your area of academic interest.

You can choose from one of these pathways:

  • Humanities/Social Sciences
  • Science

On successful completion of this Certificate, you will gain admission to the University and be eligible to enrol in an undergraduate study.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Successful completion of High School Diploma from an accredited high school, plus a minimum ACT composite score of 24 or a minimum SAT result of 1100 out of 1600 (new SAT scores) or 1650 out of 2400 (old SAT scores) (Aggregate of Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and Mathematic scores in SAT Reasoning Tests taken from March 2016, or the Critical Reading and Mathematics scores in SAT Reasoning Tests taken prior to March 2016.). English Language Requirements: IELTS - 6.0 (no band less than 5.5); TOEFL iBT- 80 overall (min 19 in Writing); PTE Academic - 50 Overall (min 42 in communicative skills); Cambridge English - 169.

For international students

You will meet the university admission requirements as specified, or shall have:

  • completed Year 13 at a New Zealand secondary school, or equivalent

You will have English language proficiency of IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 5.0 in each band or have completed the Direct Entry English Pathway (DEEP) qualification.

TOEFL iBT: 80 overall (min 17 in Writing)

PTE Academic: 50 overall (min 36 in communicative skills)

Cambridge English: 170
