Are you a Marine Engineer looking to take the next step in your career?

Are you an existing Marine Engineer Officer of the Watch?

Upgrade your licence level to manage engineering and technical teams on-board some of the most technologically advanced ships.

You'll also develop the critical thinking skills to solve complicated engineering problems at sea.

When you graduate, you will be ready to take charge of engineering operations and lead teams of engineers.

On completion of the Marine Engineer Class 2 (MEC2) you can choose to take your qualification to the highest level with the Chief Marine Engineer Class 1 (MEC1).

Programme structure

You will need to complete the below eight courses (120 credits):

Level 5

946.506 Marine Engineering Maths 1 (15 credits)

Level 6

942.674 Fluid Mechanics Management (10 credits)

942.677 Electrical, Electronic and Control Engineering Management (15 credits)

Level 7

942.733 Solid Mechanics Management (15 credits)

942.736 Human Elements in Leadership and Management (HELM) (Leadership and Management) (15 credits)

942.745 Naval Architecture Management (15 credits)

942.750 Thermodynamics 2 (20 credits)

942.752 Engineering Knowledge (15 credits)

For Chief Engineer, Marine Engineer Class 1 (MEC 1), you will also need to complete the below two courses (30 credits):

Career opportunities

Chief (MEC 1) and Second Engineer (MEC 2)

Senior engineers and heads of technical departments on-board the most complex and advanced vessels; technical operations on-board large cruise ships; managerial shore-based positions.

Entry requirements

For international students

Entry to the programme is restricted to:

a) those students holding a Watchkeeper deck Certificate of Competency issued by Maritime New Zealand or an overseas qualification recognised by MNZ as being equivalent,

Or

b) those students who have completed the academic components of the NZ2515 NZ Diploma in Nautical Science programme,

Or

c) those students holding a Marine Engineer Class 3 Certificate of Competency issued by Maritime New Zealand or an overseas qualification recognised by MNZ as being equivalent, and passes within the past five years in the Mathematics and Engineering Drawing courses of the revised Class 3 Certificate of Competency,

Or

d) those students who have completed the academic components of the NZ2514 New Zealand Diploma in Marine Engineering programme.

IELTS test: Academic score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5; TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT): Score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE); TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT): Score of 60 (with a writing score of 18); Cambridge English Examinations: B2 First, or B2 First for schools, or C1 Advanced, or C2 Proficiency with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill; Pearson Test of English (Academic): PTE (Academic) score of 50 with no band score lower than 42.
