What will I learn?

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree is a one-year, research-only master’s degree. It's enables you to expand your research capabilities by focusing on a particular area of interest, under the supervision of AUT's expert academic staff. It can provide a pathway to more advanced research at doctoral level.

Study architecture with us and learn to design built environments that recognise indigenous values and address Auckland's rapid population growth, as well as global issues like housing affordability, global warming and homelessness.

What you study

You complete an original thesis during this year of study.

AUT staff are available to supervise MPhil research on a wide range of topics.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Minimum entry requirements are a successfully completed bachelor’s degree in the same area of study from a recognised university. English Language requirements: Minimum IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 overall with all bands 6.0 or higher; TOEFL iBT score of 90; Certificate in English for Academic Study (CertEAS) with A grade; GIE with B+ grade; CAE minimum overall score of 176; PTE minimum overall score of 58.

For international students

Must have completed one of the following with the equivalent of a B grade average or higher:

  • Four-year bachelor’s degree OR
  • Bachelor’s honours degree OR
  • Bachelor’s degree and a postgraduate diploma OR
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of experience relevant to the proposed programme of research

An interview may be required for particular research areas.

English Language requirements:
