What will I learn?

This certificate is designed for you to be ready to study at certificate or diploma at level 6, diploma or degree at level 7 or graduate certificate or diploma at level 7.

On successful completion of this level you will be able to:

  • Write a text under test conditions in English for an academic purpose
  • Deliver an oral presentation in English for an academic purpose
  • Demonstrate understanding of a spoken text and process information in English for an academic purpose
  • Write a crafted text for a specified audience using researched material in English for an academic purpose
  • Read and process information in English for an academic purpose.

Career opportunities & pathways

Completion of this programme can help you gain entry into other NMIT programmes that require an IELTS score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5. At NMIT we test your English language skills when you arrive, so we can get you started at the best level for your learning. If you qualify for this Level 4 programme, you could be up to speed in just 16 weeks (plus study break/s).

Entry requirements

For international students

NCEA Level 2 or equivalent

English language requirements

  • General or Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5
  • TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14)
  • Cambridge English Examinations - B2 First or B2 First for schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skill
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36
