UCOL's New Zealand Certificate in Exercise provides students with the knowledge to prescribe, deliver and adapt fitness programmes for the general population, including people with common health issues.


Your studies include 25 practicum hours working with a client on their health goals.

Career & Study Outcomes

Graduates of UCOL's New Zealand Certificate in Exercise will be able to deliver safe and effective exercise programmes to clients. Employment opportunities include:

  • Exercise consultant
  • Community exercise instructor
  • Team training instructor
  • Personal trainer

Graduates will be eligible to register with the New Zealand Register of Exercise Professionals for Personal Trainer Contractor Registration Level.

Course Information

Exercise Programming (30 Credits) (7 practicum hours):
Learn the knowledge to prescribe, deliver and adapt fitness programs to both health clients and common at risk groups.

Health and Wellness (20 Credits) (18 practicum hours):
Gain knowledge of health and wellness frameworks. Learn about nutrition principles, wider allied health professionals, and effective motivation and communication techniques to enhance commitment to personalised exercise programmes.

Business Practices (10 Credits):
Learn about marketing and business practices as an exercise professional.

Entry requirements

For international students

  • NCEA Level 2 OR
  • Equivalent academic achievement OR
  • On a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Executive Dean.

Applicants whose first language is not English must have an IELTS General or Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5 (or equivalent including TOEFL). IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form (i.e. combining scores from more than one test is not permissible). TOEFL (iBT) score of 46 (with a writing score of 14); Cambridge B2 First (for Schools), C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency: B2 with score of 162; no less than 154 in each skill; OET: Minimum Grade C or 200 in all subtests.
