What will I learn?

This entry-level certificate provides the skills and knowledge to design and deliver exercise programmes within a framework of health and wellness. The programme focuses on providing individual and community needs to enhance the cultural, social and economic wellbeing of the people of Aotearoa New Zealand. Recognised by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS), this certificate is a practically based programme that potentially leads to employment in the sport and exercise industry. Graduates will be eligible to register with REPS.

You will learn how to:

  • Deliver safe and effective exercise programmes, including pre-screening, within own scope of practice and industry code of ethics;
  • Apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology to adapt and deliver safe and effective exercise programmes to individuals;
  • Adapt programmes for apparently healthy people and common at risk groups using exercise science and testing;
  • Apply motivational and communication techniques to enhance individual participant commitment to a personalised exercise programme;
  • Apply a health and wellness framework and evidence-based nutrition principles to support a personalised exercise programme and recommend referral pathways to allied health professionals;
  • Use marketing and business tools and techniques to support business practices as an exercise professional

Online option

This programme is delivered over 30 weeks (course by course) through a combination of online learning and 220 hours of practical work experience gained in an approved facility.

Prior to starting the programme, enrolled students must gain approval from an appropriate fitness facility to complete their training on-site.

Students are also required to find themselves a fitness mentor – that means they’ll have access to a qualified fitness professional to assist them with their studies..

Career Options

Graduates can be employed or self employed in exciting roles such as: exercise consultant, community exercise instructor, team training instructor or personal trainer

This qualification provides a pathway to the New Zealand Certificate in Exercise (Level 5)

Entry requirements

For international students

Open entry.

Students must also meet the English language proficiency requirements as below:

  • IELTS 5.5 (general or academic) with no band score lower than 5
  • TOEFL (pBT) score of 530 (with an essay score of 4.5 TWE)
  • TOEFL (iBT) score of 46 (with a writing score of 14)
  • Cambridge English Examinations: B2 First or B2 First for schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skill
  • OET: Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests
  • PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36
  • NZCEL Level 3 with an endorsement of Applied
  • LanguageCert - B2 Communicator IESOL (LRWS) with PASS and no less than Pass in each skill
