What will I learn?

Once you have successfully completed this fast paced hands-on qualification of study you will have learnt full table service skills, restaurant service, bar service, cafe skills, health and safety requirements and essential hospitality skills. This programme is available in either New Plymouth or Hawera!

You will learn how to:

  • Apply health and safety, food safety and security practices to ensure own safety and minimise potential hazards when serving customers.
  • Communicate effectively when serving customers and behave in a professional manner with colleagues, managers and customers.
  • Follow standard operating procedures to deal with familiar problems in a hospitality establishment.

Restaurant Services strand:

  • Provide food and beverage service in a restaurant.

Barista strand:

  • Prepare and present a range of espresso beverages for customers

Work Experience

There is no work experience component in this programme, however work experience or part-time employment is strongly recommended.

Students must also meet the English language proficiency requirements as below:

  • General or Academic IELTS score of 5 with no band score lower than 5
  • TOEFL (pBT) score of 500 (with an essay score of 4.0 TWE)
  • TOEFL (iBT) score of 35 (with a writing score of 14)
  • Cambridge English Examinations: B2 First or B2 First for Schools with a score of 154. No less than 154 in each skill
  • OET: Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests
  • PTE (Academic) score of 36 with no band score lower than 36
  • NZCEL Level 3 with an endorsement General
  • LanguageCert - B1 Achiever IESOL (LRWS) with PASS and no less than Pass in each skill
