What will I learn?

UCOL’s New Zealand Diploma in Architectural Technology will provide you with the knowledge and skills to work independently as an architectural technician on small to medium scale build projects from all stages to completion.

Gain competency to work on large and/or complex building projects under the supervision of an experienced architectural technician, designer or architect.

This qualification provides employers and consumers with the confidence that the working drawings produced meet with the requirements of New Zealand legislation, Codes of Practice, and New Zealand and Australian Standards.

Education pathway

This qualification provides a pathway to further tertiary study at diploma or degree level in the field of Architectural Technology, Construction Management or Quantity Surveying.

Career pathway

Successful graduates of UCOL's New Zealand Diploma in Architectural Technology will be able to:

  • Evaluate design principles for a building project.
  • Carry out feasibility studies for small, medium and large buildings.
  • Establish a clients’ requirements, develop and communicate a concept and building design, and prepare approval documentation for a building project in accordance with the clients’ brief.
  • Evaluate the performance of and select materials and finishes to be used in the building process.
  • Prepare, organise and present architectural working drawings for small and medium buildings using manual and digital technologies in accordance with the statutory and regulatory environment.
  • Understand the roles, documentation and administrative requirements of the construction industry, apply this knowledge and assist senior personnel through the tender process.

Graduates will be able to work as an architectural technician, but with further training, career options include:

  • Interior designer
  • Urban designer
  • Landscape architect

  • Consultant design practice owner
  • Or in another field related to construction, planning or design

Entry requirements

For international students

  • A minimum of 50 NCEA credits at Level 2, including 12 Credits in Mathematics and a minimum of 12 Literacy Credits at NCEA Level 1;
  • or be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.

Applicants whose first language is not English must have an IELTS Academic Score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5 or TOEFL pBT Score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE), or
TOEFL iBT Score of 60 or higher (with a writing score of 20), or Cambridge FCE with a pass at Grade B or CAE with a score of 52 or higher, or NZCEL Level 4 with the Academic endorsement

Under 20 years of age:
