This programme is designed for people wanting to become highly qualified professionals in sport, recreation, exercise science, sport coaching and sport/leisure management.

Love your sport? You can also choose a contextualised delivery in:

Rugby (in partnership with Counties Manukau Rugby Union and Wanganui Rugby Union)
Basketball (in partnership with Auckland Basketball services Ltd)

Our rugby and basketball contextualisations have been designed for people with a passion for their sport, who want to become a highly qualified professional in their chosen industry.

All projects and practical sessions are contextualised to your sport, and you gain industry experience while you study.

Programme structure

You will need to complete the below eight courses (120 credits):

781.514 Structural kinesiology (15 credits)

781.515 Coaching pedagogy (15 credits)

781.516 Sport sociology (15 credits)

781.517 Introduction to sports as a business (15 credits)

781.518 Human anatomy and physiology (15 credits)

781.519 Exercise prescription for personal trainers (15 credits)

781.520 He oranga hauora (healthy lifestyle) (15 credits)

781.521 Introduction to biomechanics (15 credits)

Career opportunities

Careers include becoming a fitness instructor, personal trainer, recreation programmer, event manager, sports administration, coach, Hauora and health educator, Kaiarahi, OSCAR leader, sports coordinator and whanau ora leader.

Further training or study

On completion of the New Zealand Diploma in Sport, Recreation students wishing to continue study are eligible to either choose to do New Zealand Diploma in Sport, Recreation and Exercise (Multi-sector) (Level 6) or go straight into year two of the Bachelor of Applied Sport and Exercise Science (Level 7).

Entry requirements

For international students

Open entry - There are no academic requirements that need to be met to enter this programme.

IELTS test: Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5; TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT): Score of 530 (with an essay score of 4.5 TWE); TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT): Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14); Cambridge English Examinations: B2 First or B2 First for schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skill; OET - Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests; Pearson Test of English (Academic): PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36
