What will I learn?

This diploma is a one year full-time interdisciplinary programme providing qualified health professionals and health service managers with advanced practice knowledge and critical analysis skills.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science is characterised by advanced study in a specific nursing or health science discipline, requiring a foundation of undergraduate knowledge and skills achieved through previous tertiary qualifications or equivalent professional experience.

You can enrol directly into this diploma or use it to further develop the knowledge and skills you gained while studying for the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science. Upon graduation from this diploma you can choose to progress onto one of EIT’s masters programmes.

Outline

The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science is approved by the Nursing Council of New Zealand as an advanced nursing practice programme. The diploma offers two pathways, one for nurses and one for health science. A selection of courses designed to meet the needs of health practitioners, health sector managers and other professionals whose practice has a focus on health. The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science may be completed with or without a specialty option.

NURSING SPECIALTY ENDORSEMENT OPTIONS AVAILABLE ARE:

Advanced Nursing Practice

Registered Nurse Prescribing (Approved by the Nursing Council of New Zealand) participants may enrol directly into the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science or further develop knowledge and skills gained during study of the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science.

The Postgraduate Diploma shall be awarded at the successful completion of 120 credits at level 8 (NZQA).

Graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science will have developed their knowledge and skills of critical analysis, constructive synthesis and their application to high quality approaches to health care delivery.

Study Pathways

Interdisciplinary graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science may apply to progress on to the EIT Master of Health Science programme, and registered nurse graduates may apply to progress on to the EIT Master of Nursing programme.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science is approved by the Nursing Council of New Zealand as an “advanced nursing practice programme”.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

A bachelor’s degree in computing at a recognized educational institute or A bachelor’s degree in a related area (e.g. Business, Visual Arts, and Science) and appropriate IT work experience in a junior/middle management position; Tertiary graduates who have appropriate work experience in a middle/ senior management position, and wish to improve their skills and gain a higher level qualification may also apply. English Language Requirements: IELTS Academic score of 6.5 with no band score lower than 6.0; TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT) score of 590 (with an essay score of 5.5 TWE); TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) score of 79 (with a writing score of 21); University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations: CAE or CPE with a score of 176. No less than 169 in each skill; Pearson Test of English (Academic) score of 58; City & Guilds IESOL: C1 Expert with a score of 42; NZCEL Level 5 Academic.

For international students

The requirement for entry is an undergraduate degree in a health science/ health discipline with a B average or better.

Where an applicant does not hold an undergraduate degree in health science, submissions with supporting professional evidence may be considered.
