What will I learn?

This programme aims to develop the knowledge and skills of a Bachelor’s-level graduate Mechanical Engineering to Masters level through advanced teaching, design work and research. It provides an opportunity for candidates from a different Engineering background to develop key Mechanical Engineering knowledge and skills required for their professional development. A key objective of the programme is to be an accredited route to becoming a Chartered Engineer.

This programme makes use of Masters-level courses in the Energy Sciences and Manufacture and Design complemented with specialist courses from relevant MSc courses offered by the Institute. There is a growing need for an advanced mechanical engineering programme from our industry partners and this programme has been specifically developed to meet this need and to encourage students into further learning. 9 months (Diploma) also available in this course.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

For most of our Masters level programmes we require a good first degree with a GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 (or equivalent) or above in a relevant subject. Students require IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each element or an acceptable equivalent.

For international students

Students should have a good Honours degree (2.i) in Mechanical Engineering. Equivalent overseas qualifications will be considered. Alternative backgrounds, such as vocational training complemented with sufficient relevant industrial experience and continued professional development will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Students need to have an IELTS of 6.5 overall or an acceptable equivalent; Heriot-Watt English - C; PTE Academic - 58-64; TOEFL IBT- 90; Cambridge (New) - 176-184; Cambridge (Old) - FCE (grade A), CAE (grade C); Trinity ISE II - Pass in all components.
