Our Automation and Control MSc prepares you for a career as a design or development engineer in control and automated systems.

About this course

This course will provide you with a broad coverage of all of the major disciplines in automation and control. It will also prepare you for a career in a a wide range of industrial sectors.

Our MSc is designed for both practising professionals and new graduates in electrical and electronic engineering and other related engineering disciplines.

You will learn through innovative educational techniques designed to equip you with practical design skills and research methodologies - crucial for industry and further research studies (PhD).

What you'll learn

This degree covers all major disciplines in automation and control, providing core knowledge and understanding of control system design and automation systems. You will develop critical thinking and gain an appreciation of real-life problems in an area of industry where skills are in great demand.

You will:

  • develop an in depth understanding of system analysis and controller design using state space techniques with Matlab applications
  • gain design skills through an understanding of fundamentals and modern methods in digital control systems
  • develop the ability to analyse and design control systems for industrial applications
  • gain theoretical knowledge and practical skills in industrial automation technology, including; industrial robotics, servomechanisms, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and distributed control systems
  • apply multi-disciplinary skills and expertise in engineering and computing to investigate a complex problem through analysis, design and development of an original system or device

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Students should have a four-year bachelor's degree with a minimum GPA ranging from 2.8 to 3.2 out of 4.0 (admissions criteria will vary depending on which course they are applying to).

For international students

A 2:2 BEng honours degree, or international equivalent, in: electrical and electronic engineering; computer engineering; mechanical engineering; physics; communications or information and control engineering. Relevant professional experience is desirable, although not essential. We will consider your application on an individual basis if you have lower or non-standard qualifications and significant, relevant professional experience. English Language Requirements - IELTS 6.0 overall (with a minimum of 5.5 in all sub-skills).; TOEFL 79 overall (with a minimum of 17 in listening, 18 in reading, 20 in speaking, and 17 in writing).; Pearsons 54 overall (with a minimum of 51 in all sub-skills).
