What will I learn?
Biomedical science is the term for the investigations carried out on samples of tissue and body fluids to diagnose diseases and monitor the treatment of patients. As a Biomedical Science student, you will explore the cutting-edge application of scientific investigation to human health. You’ll study a range of topics including anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, cell biology, microbiology, immunology, and more. Throughout the course, you’ll be exploring the analytical skills needed in modern biomedical science, along with research and diagnostic techniques. Our course is professionally accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), which enables our graduates to gain the necessary skills and qualifications sought by employers. Students also have the option to undertake an additional placement year in a clinical or industry laboratory. As we are an IBMS accredited course, completing a clinical lab placement enables students to gain the necessary registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), which is a requirement to become an NHS Biomedical Scientist.A biomedical science degree is highly sought after in NHS pathology centres, forensic science laboratories, research institutions, and the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. Successful graduates can benefit from entering a dynamic profession with long-term career prospects in research, specialised laboratory work, education, and management.**Key features**• Benefit from Education 2030, where a simplified ‘block learning’ timetable means you will study one subject at a time and have more time to engage with your learning, receive faster feedback and enjoy a better study-life balance• Professionally accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science, so you graduate with skills and qualifications sought by employers• You will study a range of modules including anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, cell biology, microbiology and the core analytical skills of modern biomedical science. Throughout the course, you’ll be exploring the analytical skills needed in modern biomedical science, along with research and diagnostic techniques• Gain industry experience during an optional placement year*. Our students have worked in a number of NHS pathology centres, as well as in research laboratories at organisations including the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Public Health England• Gain industry experience during an optional placement year*. Our students have worked in a number of NHS pathology centres, as well as in research laboratories at organisations including the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Public Health England• Our graduates have gone on to work in diagnostic laboratories in both the public and private sectors, NHS pathology centres, research institutions and the biotechnology industry, in roles as biomedical scientists, laboratory assistants, associate practitioners, pharmacology technicians, as well as lectures and researchers within Higher Education• Register as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council after a period of clinical laboratory training (this can be completed as part of your optional placement year).**DMU’s careers and employability service, known as DMU Works, was awarded the Best University Careers/Employability Service at the National Undergraduate Employability (NUE) Awards in February 2021.
