What will I learn?

Overview

Do you want to build on your knowledge of civil engineering by understanding how environmental factors can influence the engineering process?

On this Master's in Civil Engineering MSc degree course, you'll learn more about the environment's impact on the way we plan, design, construct and manage large-scale public works. You'll cover issues such as pollution, public health and resource management, and study the impacts they make.

You can specialise in earthquake, environmental, geotechnical or structural engineering in your design project and graduate with an award that reflects your specialism, for example, Civil Engineering with Earthquake Engineering.

We'll provide you with the expertise and support you need to develop your professional practice – so that once you graduate, you'll have the expertise to enter a career as a construction industry professional or environmental consultant.

This course is accredited by the Engineering Council, meeting the requirements for Further Learning for CEng for candidates who have already acquired an accredited CEng (partial) BEng (Hons) or an accredited IEng (full) BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree.

On this course you'll:

Use our laboratory facilities, including an environmental lab and computing equipment
Apply your skills to real-life practical problems as part of our partnership schemes with local and global organisations
Be able to study overseas through the ERASMUS+ exchange scheme
Specialise in a specific area of civil engineering in your design project
Complete your own civil engineering design project and independent research project
Learn how to address complex construction project problems

The degree you graduate with depends on what area you focus on in your design project. Your options are:

MSc Civil Engineering
MSc Civil Engineering with Earthquake Engineering
MSc Civil Engineering with Environmental Engineering
MSc Civil Engineering with Geotechnical Engineering
MSc Civil Engineering with Structural Engineering

You don't need to decide which area to specialise in until you begin your design project.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

For entry to our postgraduate Master's programmes, you'll usually need to have a Bachelor's degree with a GPA of 2.6 /4 or above from a recognised Higher Education institution. Students need a minimum of IELTS band 6.5–7.0, with no component below 6.0.

For international students

A good honours degree in Civil Engineering or a related subject, or equivalent industrial and work experience. English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.0 with no component score below 5.5.
