What will I learn?

This part-time MSc in Clinical Leadership and Change Management in Cardiology is an interprofessional e-learning programme for healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with cardiac conditions who have successfully completed the Cardiff University Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Leadership and Change Management in Cardiology. The dissertation year will build and apply learning from the PgDip programme and enable the student to undertake either research, audit, innovation or service evaluation with the aim to lead and make change within the management of people at risk of or having cardiovascular disease. It provides an educational experience that fulfils the needs of the NHS in supporting the development of outstanding care for the future within the field of cardiology, allowing responsive transformational changes to be made and evaluated, and promoting continued improvement. The programme facilitates a process in which you can systematically understand where current gaps lie in the care that is delivered from a systems perspective in an integrated way, and supported in reaching the correct diagnosis and management, and address unmet clinical needs. In the taught stages you will have completed high quality level 7 assessments based on evidence based practice, which is directly relevant to your clinical practice, and will have been encouraged and supported to gain knowledge around clinical evaluation and research and undertake a local quality improvement activity. In this stage, you will undertake a regional quality improvement activity to complete the MSc.

The aim of the programme is to develop critical thinkers who are able to demonstrate mastery in either the prevention/early recognition of cardiovascular disease or in diagnosing, assessing and managing those living with cardiovascular disease and through research, audit, innovation or service evaluation lead clinically meaningful and sustainable change in practice; consolidate the advanced skills in leadership and organisational health care management developed during the PgDip so that they can analyse the organisations within which they work, can evaluate steps required to change cultures, respond to the needs of stakeholders and effect clinically meaningful changes that can be evaluated; synthesise and reflect on learning from the PgDip to transform health care responding to the needs of people living with or likely to develop cardiovascular conditions and their families, providing role models for their peers. All of the students undertaking this programme will be in employment. However, many senior health care roles require clinicians to have advanced academic training and therefore the MSc is seen as a vehicle for promotion to extended and senior roles. The involvement of leadership, organisational management and quality and safety modules, facilitate innovation and change within health care and provide transferable skills that alumni can apply in any health care setting. Publication of your dissertation and/or the implementation of a successful and sustainable change will be viewed highly by senior managers.
