Fieldwork – Fieldwork is essential in our degree programmes, renowned for high-quality training. You will get the chance to take part in one week residential's in year one and two to Northern Island and SW Wales. The University covers travel and accommodation costs for all compulsory field courses. As well as providing basic field supplies. Research-led teaching – Our world-leading research informs our programmes, taught by expert academics. REF ranks University of Birmingham 3rd in the UK for Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences. Flexibility - The varied module portfolio allows you to specialise in areas of interest, from natural hazards to climate change and hydrogeology Accreditation - Accredited by the Geological Society provides a mark of quality and a pathway to becoming a Chartered Geologist, making it a distinctive choice for students interested in Earth sciences. Earth Sciences uses a variety of methods to assess student performance, including exams, essays and dissertations. At the beginning of each module, you'll be given information on how and when you'll be assessed for that particular area of study.

Entry requirements

For international students

Applicants are typically required to achieve A Level grades of AAB, including one required science subject. For the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, a score of 6,6,5 at Higher Level with 32 points overall, including one Higher Level required science, is expected. Accepted science subjects include Biology, Chemistry, Computing, Electronics, Environmental Studies, Further Mathematics, Geography, Geology, Human Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology, Statistics, and Physical Education. A minimum of three A Levels is required. General Studies is not accepted, although a strong performance may be taken into account if the conditions of the offer are not met. BTEC Extended Diploma, Diploma, and Subsidiary Diploma qualifications are also considered; however, subjects are assessed on a case-by-case basis, and applicants are advised to contact the university for further guidance.
