How will I be assessed?

Entry to all honours degrees at Newcastle University is highly competitive, and students hoping to progress onto undergraduate architectural degree programmes at Newcastle University must maintain high standards throughout the Year One programme.

While your grades in the Year One programme do not count towards the final degree, your performance will be used to determine whether you meet the specified progression grades for direct entry to your chosen business degree programme at the University.

Assessment is both formal and informal. Informally you will receive advice and feedback throughout your programme from your teachers, enabling you to build on your successes and meet the requirements for entry to the second year of a degree.

You will also be assessed by a combination of examinations at the end of each semester, and coursework including

  • Reports
  • Practical exercises
  • Group and individual research projects
  • Presentations
  • Problem-solving exercises.

Specific grade requirements will apply to individual degree courses.

Entry requirements

For international students

Academic requirements:Satisfactory completion of A-levels, a recognised Foundation programme, first year of an overseas university degree programme with good grades, or equivalent. You will be required to provide a portfolio as part of the application. This should document your experiences and the expertise you have gained in previous studies. It should demonstrate a range of core skills and a basic understanding of architecture. Age requirements:17 years and above. All students commencing courses on a published September start date must be 17 years old by 31 December of that calendar year. English language requirements: for 3 term IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in writing) or equivalent; for 4 term IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in writing) or equivalent.
