What will I learn?

Overview

We encourage diversity in thinking and making, acknowledging the potential in material exploration, collaborative working, cross-fertilisation of ideas, and the exploration of new and vital concepts. Critical enquiry and practice-based exploration are central to the programmes, helping you to make dynamic and challenging work that resonates and reflects your key concerns in light of current national and international dialogues.

MA Disruptive Design focuses on design that is transgressive, operating beyond the perceived or accepted silos and borders. The subject of traditional design disciplines is dissolved, enabling you to engage with urgent and compelling contemporary issues that impact how design can newly manifest, be realised and impact locally and globally.

Working at the interface between physical and digital design processes, the programme encourages innovation with an understanding of contemporary shifts in sustainable, ethical and open design principles.

You will engage in design thinking and research-centred projects, developing conceptual thinking and visual literacies through iterative design, working with complexity and ambiguity, enabling you to assimilate diverse ideas and dynamic outcomes.

Our programmes offer professional skills development to support our students as they progress within industry, self-employment (in the Creative Industries sector) and further Level 7 and 8 studies.

Alumni of our Graduate School pursue careers in the fields of fine art, craft and design, as practising artists, teachers, curators, and as gallery, theatre and technical professionals. Others go on to prepare for doctoral study, and set up viable projects as socially engaged and community-based practitioners.

The second module offers an opportunity to test out the practices being investigated by individual students within an appropriate, live setting.
