What will I learn?

French - French will develop language and communications skills to a high level of proficiency. You will have the opportunity to engage with a number of specialist topics including French language, literature, culture, history, politics and film. During your third year, you have the opportunity to study abroad in France at one of the University’s Erasmus+ partners. Students who spend a year abroad not only gain valuable work experience as teachers and tutors, but also develop their linguistic skills, intercultural competence, and self-confidence.

Italian – As a student of Italian, you will develop language and communication skills to a high level of proficiency. You will also have the opportunity to engage with a number of specialist topics comprising Italian literature, culture, history, politics and film. Italian is available to both beginners and non-beginners. Both cohorts are introduced to a wide spectrum of cultural and literary genres, from mediaeval texts and poetry to 20th-century Italian novels, films and more.

Ancient History - Ancient History explores the history of Greece and Rome, and neighbouring peoples such as the Persians and Carthaginians. Students study the period from the beginning of Greek writing and urbanism in eighth century BCE through to the collapse of the western Roman empire in the fifth century CE. Geographically the subject is centred on the Mediterranean world, but at times extends from the Persian Gulf to the Clyde and from the Crimea to the Sahara.

International Baccalaureate (IB): 36 (HL 6,5,5) to 38 (HL 6,6,6, plus SL 6,6,6), with the majority of offers for subjects in the Faculty of Arts and Medicine being at the upper end of this range or higher. Some subjects also require specific HL or SL sub-scores. Academic IELTS Overall score required: 5.5. Component scores required: Listening: 5.0; Reading: 5.0; Writing: 5.0; Speaking: 5.0.
