What will I learn?

Why study Civil Engineering?

Our Civil Engineering MSc will give you a comprehensive overview of what it takes to deliver a successful civil engineering project. You’ll learn the advanced capabilities and in-depth knowledge needed to thrive in your civil engineering career and solve work challenges such as environmental sustainability.

You’ll develop your research skills by completing a dissertation on a topic you want to explore further, supported by our academic staff.

Designed and delivered by a multi-disciplinary team of leading academics, who have over 60 years' experience in training civil engineers. Abertay has close links with industry and a high research rating in Civil and Environmental Engineering within Scotland.

You’ll graduate with the ability to manage and solve the multi-layered environmental challenges within current civil engineering projects.

The programme can be studied full time for one year or over two years part-time.

Learning and Assessment

The taught course will be assessed using a combination of written coursework, presentations, examinations and portfolios, and a written dissertation. Formal examinations, class tests and reports will also feature where relevant.

You’ll be exposed to a variety of teaching, learning and assessment practices throughout your MSc programme. This includes lectures, seminars, written/oral presentations and project work.

Field trips and industrial visits are used to develop student appreciation of the practical application of research methods and data analysis.

Upon Graduation, You Will:

  • Be able to create sustainable design solutions to real-world problems, while evaluating the commercial, legal and environmental risks.
  • Understand current and emerging techniques in civil engineering practice.
  • Have the business and decision-making skills to lead teams and work in senior roles.
  • Use your advanced knowledge to solve real-world problems.
  • Communicate complex issues effectively to a wide range of stakeholders.

Entry requirements

For international students

Applicants should have: At least a lower second class (2:2) honours degree or equivalent qualifications in Civil Engineering or Civil and Environmental Engineering and other related disciplines such as Water Resources, Irrigation, Infrastructure, Public Health or Sanitary, Municipal, Geotechnical etc. Applicants with non-standard qualifications will be considered on an individual basis, determined by prior study, work experience, professional qualifications, and references. IELTS - Minimum: overall score 6.0 (with no component less than 5.5). TOEFL - Minimum overall score: 78 (individual components: Listening 17, Reading 18, Speaking 20, Writing 17).
