What will I learn?

Delivered in partnership with the Singapore Institute of Management, the MSc Financial Management provides the knowledge and skills to give you a significant edge in this competitive global finance sector, with emphasis on the sector internationally, with special emphasis on Singapore and Asia.

The MSc Financial Management gives students a comprehensive and critical knowledge of corporate finance. It also teaches how to interpret and analyse financial statements, how to value securities and businesses as well as how to apply a wide range of financial modelling techniques.

Students will also gain critical understanding of international financial markets, including foreign exchange markets, private equity, venture capital and Islamic financial markets. This programme is taught by Birmingham Business School faculty at Singapore Institute of Management. The range of knowledge and skills it develops are in high demand in banks, insurance companies, stock broking firms and other industries in the finance sector. They are also in high demand in the treasury departments of many regional and multinational companies. The overall aim of the programme is to produce responsible financial management specialists who will be able to contribute to these organisations and craft a career in the sector.

The programme is innovative and contemporary, covering topics on financial technology, data analytics, ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) financing as well as international cash and liquidity management. The contemporaneousness of the programme is key in ensuring graduates are industry ready for the finance sector globally and in South East Asia.

Careers and Development

Graduates may find themselves taking a major step towards developing an international or strategic focus within their careers. While some will accelerate their careers with existing employers, others can create potential for change. Major directions include jobs in business analysis and development, banking, management and strategy consulting, corporate finance and investment, human resource management and marketing.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Students need an honours degree from a recognised institution in the USA with a GPA of at least: 2.8 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) for entry to programmes with a 2:2 requirement; 3.2 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) for entry to programmes with a 2:1 requirement.

For international students

Students need to have a degree equivalent to a 2:1 or higher in the UK obtained in any subject from a university in Singapore or an equivalent qualification obtained from overseas; and (b) a qualification equivalent to a pass grade in the GCE ‘A’ Level Mathematics in the UK obtained from Singapore or equivalent. Students need to have an IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band is equivalent to: TOEFL: 88 overall with no less than 21 in Reading, 21 Listening, 22 Speaking and 21 in Writing; Pearson Test of English (PTE): Academic 59 in all four skills; Cambridge English (exams taken from 2015): Advanced - minimum overall score of 176, with no less than 169 in any component.
