What will I learn?


River basins are of fundamental importance to the world’s population, meaning that research training in water dynamics and management are in high demand by both industry and academia. The University of Leeds has a world-class reputation for water-related research and GIS development in an environmental context and our River Basin Dynamics and Management MSc builds on that success.

Core components of the programme are river basin hydrology and basic environmental GIS. Students will gain advanced knowledge and skills in channel hydraulics and sediment transport, river ecology and environmental assessment.Students will also be able to gain an advanced knowledge and skills in GIS for environment, GIS programming and digital image analysis and remote sensing.

This highly practical course advocates 'learning by doing' and is assessed 100% by coursework. We host guest lecturers from business, industry and academia, visit work places and conduct a series of field, laboratory and PC-based practicals. You also have the chance to do a work placement.


Our River Basin Dynamics and Management with GIS programme is accredited by Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM).

Learning and teaching

The programme manager for this course is Dr Paul Kay.

Teaching for this Masters course is delivered through lectures, tutorials, fieldwork and seminars. You will also have the opportunity to interact significantly with industry and business.


Assessment is entirely by coursework. You will need to show that you can conduct independent in-depth enquiry and evaluate and criticise received opinion. You will apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to a complex specialist area and will complete an independent masters-level dissertation.

This programme offers a range of transferable, marketable skills required to obtain employment in river basin processes and management or to pursue a career in research and education.

Typical roles undertaken by our recent graduates include Assistant Analyst, Flood warning Engineer, Graduate Engineer, Graduate Water Scientist/Catchment Scientist, Hydrologist/Hydrogeologist, Licensing Officer, Planning Liaison Officer, PhD study, Projects Co-ordinator, Water Resource Manager.

Our graduates typically work for environmental consultancies, the water industry, regulators and NGO’s.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

For Postgraduate qualification, students need to have 4 year Bachelors: for courses requiring 2.1 students need to have a GPA of 3.0; for courses requiring 2.2 students need to have a GPA of 2.5. Minimum qualifications include: IELTS (International English Language Testing System) an overall band of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each component skill.

For international students

Students need a bachelor degree with a 2:1 (hons) in geography or a related subject, eg environmental sciences or ecological sciences. Relevant work experience is viewed positively and is taken into account particularly for candidates whose first degree grade is slightly below our requirement. We accept a range of International Qualifications. Students must have an IELTS overall score of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each component skill. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) of 92 with no less than 21 in listening, 21 in reading, 23 in speaking and 22 in writing. Pearson (Academic) of 64 overall with no less than 60 in any component. Cambridge Advanced English (CAE) of 176 overall with no less than 169 in any component. Trinity College Integrated Skills in English a Pass in ISE II or above (if taken in the UK).
