What will I learn?

The four-year BA Russian and Serbian/Croatian is a joint honours programme split equally between your chosen languages. You will take modules not only in language (speaking, listening, reading, writing and translation) but also in cultural topics including literature, history, film, linguistics, politics and other relevant field designed to complement your language learning. With a wide variety of modules on offer, you will be able to tailor your modern languages degree to your areas of interest.You will spend a Year Abroad in the third year, split between two countries where your languages are spoken. Knowledge of Russian gives you direct access to a fascinating cultural and historical tradition, helps you understand the evolution of Russian philosophical and ideological trends, and brings you closer to one of the world’s most dynamic geopolitical regions. We are one of the largest Russian departments in the UK and studying this language at SSEES (UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies) cultivates a high proficiency in Russian language and develops your skills in analysis, presentation, problem-solving and intercultural understanding.Serbian/Croatian is written in two alphabets: Latin and Cyrillic. Both alphabets have 30 letters, each corresponding to a particular sound, which makes reading and writing Serbian/Croatian easy. Serbian/Croatian at SSEES (UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies) is taught with small class sizes, which offers the opportunity to gain excellent language skills and a profound knowledge of Serbian/Croatian literature, history and culture that will prepare you for a wide variety of careers in Europe.UCL Is ranked 3rd in the UK for Modern Languages in the 2018 QS World Rankings and offers outstanding opportunities to language students and graduates.
