What will I learn?

This fascinating subject uses elements of psychology, linguistics and social science to understand how people communicate, and how we can help adults and children with communication disorders. The Department of Human Communication Sciences at Sheffield is home to some of the UK’s leading experts in this field.The aim is for you to be confident in applying your knowledge. So project work is part of the course, and there are opportunities to get valuable experience as a volunteer at our in-house clinic or in a local school. We offer detailed feedback on your work and one-to-one support throughout the course.Our BSc graduates go into education, social work and research. Some progress to postgraduate study and become psychologists, doctors and speech language therapists.We also offer a degree (B621 BMedSci Speech and Language Therapy) that qualifies you to practise as a speech and language therapist.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Students need to have: US High School Diploma and Advanced Placement Tests/Subject SATS; Our undergraduate entry requirements for students from the USA are as follows: A High School Diploma with a GPA of 3.0+; PLUS three Subject tests – these can be a combination of Advanced Placement Tests (APs) and/or SAT Subject Tests in relevant subjects. APs in relevant subjects with grades 4/5; SAT Subject Tests in relevant subject with a test score of 600/650*; *We can also consider excellent grades in Honors or College-level classes or ACT or SAT scores in lieu of AP or SAT subject tests on a case-by-case basis; Other Qualifications - Holders of an Undergraduate Associate Degree at a two year Community College in the USA will be considered for direct admission to the first year of undergraduate programmes; International Baccalaureate - International Baccalaureate diploma holders will be considered for direct admission to undergraduate programmes. Applicants wishing to transfer from a regular undergraduate four year bachelors degree program in the USA will be considered for the first or second year of undergraduate degree programmes. Applicants will be required to have a high overall current GPA and high grades in relevant individual subject areas. Undergraduate applicants are required to achieve a minimum of IELTS 6 or equivalent.
