What will I learn?

The University of Glasgow is home to the Scottish Centre for War Studies. You will be able to participate in regular research seminars on critical themes related to conflict as well as to related conferences.

Each research student will work under the supervision of two members of staff familiar with the student's field of inquiry. Prospective students are encouraged to discuss their research ideas with members of staff who are specialists in their fields of interest before applying. The staff page indicates the research interests and email addresses of scholars in the Scottish Centre for War Studies.

Thesis length: 70,000-100,000 words, including references, bibliography and appendices (other than documentary appendices).

A Doctor of Philosophy may be awarded to a student whose thesis is an original work making a significant contribution to knowledge in, or understanding of, a field of study and normally containing material worthy of publication.

Entry requirements

For international students

Our regular standard of admission is at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree (2:1), although candidates will usually also have completed or be undertaking a Masters qualification. IELTS (Academic): 7.0 with no sub-test under 7.0. ibTOEFL: 94; with Reading 24; Listening 24; Speaking 23; Writing 27.
