What will I learn?

Communities across the country are in need of qualified psychiatric/mental health professionals. The Family Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Advanced Certificate Program is intended for licensed nurse practitioners in another specialty who want to add to or change their specialty area to psych/mental health.

This program covers mental health across the lifespan, thus the “family” designation. The program is designed to be part time and can be completed online.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have a bachelor's degree (or higher) or the equivalent from an accredited/government recognized college or university. Most such degrees will be four or more years in length; UB recognizes some three-year degrees, but not all; A B-grade (GPA of 3.0) or higher from your bachelor's degree (or equivalent) courses. Grade point averages from non-U.S. universities will be evaluated by UB's Office of International Admissions.

For international students

Before you can apply, you must have:

  • Copies of master's transcripts for review
  • The equivalent of a Master of Science (MS) degree in advanced practice nursing
  • Active U.S. RN and NP licenses
  • An active national certification in your specialty area (ex. FNP, AGNP, etc.)
  • MS GPA of 3.0 or higher

English Language Requirements:

The minimum score of TOEFL IBT is 79, the minimum score TOEFL PBT is 550, the minimum score of IELTS is 6.5, the minimum score of PTE is 55, the minimum score of Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE) Old Scale is 60, New Scale is 185, the minimum score of Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) Old Scale is 65, New Scale is 185.
