What will I learn?


The Advanced Certificate in Creative Writing is a low-residency program designed for students who have already completed an MFA in creative writing and wish to revise, reconceive, or complete a creative manuscript. It has tracks in fiction and nonfiction. Students also choose one of two supplementary tracks: the book business and self-promotion; the teaching of composition.

Program Outcomes

  • Revise, reconceive, or complete a creative manuscript so as to produce a finished manuscript of the highest possible literary merit, worthy of publication
  • Learn the basic workings of the contemporary publishing industry, including standard editorial practices, book promotion and authorial self-promotion
  • Learn the basics of the teaching of writing with an emphasis on the teaching of composition at the college level

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Students must have the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree. Minimum GPA: 2.75/4.0 or equivalent (Students with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 – 2.74 may be eligible for provisional admission).

For international students

To qualify for this program, all applicants must first successfully complete one of the following:

  • SNHU’s Mountainview Low-Residency MFA in Fiction or Nonfiction
  • SNHU’s Online MFA in Creative Writing
  • Any other MFA program in creative writing

SNHU requires an undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 (or equivalent) for admission.

Students wishing to enter directly into an Undergraduate or Graduate academic program must provide evidence of English proficiency by one of the following options: TOEFL: 71; IELTS: 6.0; PTE: 54; ELS: 112; EF: C1; ILSC: A2; Michigan: 85; ASC English: Completion of Level 6; FLS: Completion of Level 15.
