What will I learn?

The Associate of Science degree in sustainable brewing is designed for students planning a career in brewing science. This rigorous science-based program prepares students for employment in the brewing industry or other fields in the natural or physical sciences.

Students in this pathway have an interest in practices that keep the environment healthy and food production economically and socially viable. If you support fair trade and local products and you’re interested in learning about how sustainable practices benefit the environment, Sustainable Food Systems may be a good fit for you. If you enjoy food prep or any food-related concerns, as well as managing the daily operation of restaurants and other establishments that prepare and serve food and beverages, this could be ideal placement for you. Typically, you work early mornings, late evenings, weekends and holidays. This work can be fast-paced and stressful.

Job Outlook: Most job opportunities are expected to be in food service and food service management, hospitality, restaurants, bars and food production. Employment of agricultural and food scientists is projected to grow as research methods and techniques continue.

Transfer Notes: Students complete the brewing certificate courses and then, under a two-plus-two transfer program with Western Michigan University, complete sciences and general education electives toward a Bachelor of Science at Western Michigan University. It is recommended that a student complete three of the following courses to fulfill the twelve credits of science required: BIO 101, BIO 104, CHM 120, CHM 130.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Students must provide an original and official secondary school and/or college transcripts or diplomas with English translations. Other English Language Requirements: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 500 (paper test), 173 (computer-based test); Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) score of 72 or better United States post-secondary English composition course with a grade of “C” or better; A diploma from a secondary school program in which the language of instruction was English.

For international students

Students must have a diploma from a secondary school program in which the language of instruction was English.

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 500 (paper test), 173 (computer-based test), 61 (Internet-based) or better
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.0 or better
  • Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) score of 72 or better
  • United States post secondary English composition course with a grade of “C” or better
