What will I learn?

The English major is for students who enjoy reading, writing, and thinking about questions reflected on by writers through the ages and around the world. The English major develops competence in the analysis, discussion and criticism of literature. In addition to the traditional writing and literature track, the major offers three optional tracks including Narrative Arts, Fantasy & Science Fiction, and Video Literacy.

English majors who wish to teach grades 9-12 complete specific requirements in English. Professional certification is granted after completion of the High School Education and English, B.A. Dual Major.

English majors who wish to teach grades 5-9 complete specific requirements in English. Professional certification is granted after completion of the Middle School Education and English, B.A. Dual Major.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Students must have high school diploma; A high school grade point average of at least 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale).

For international students

To be considered for admission, applicants should have:

  • A high school diploma with a minimum of 22 units of credit including four units of English, three units of mathematics, two units of science, two units of social sciences (social studies) and three additional units in any of the above areas or in a foreign language.
  • A high school grade point average of at least 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Freshman applicants who do not meet the criteria listed above, and GED/HiSet applicants (who are considered on a case-by-case basis) may be asked to submit additional material, come to Maryville for a personal interview, and/or complete additional testing before an admission decision is made.

Maryville University requires that students provide proof of English proficiency for study at the University. The following are acceptable means of providing proof of English proficiency:

  • TOEFL: 69 overall with no sub score lower than 15, or
  • IELTS: 6.0 with no sub score lower than 5, or
  • DET: 40, or
  • PTE ACADEMIC: 47, or
  • ELS Center: Level 112 completed with a 2.5 grade or better, or
  • U.S. University/College Study: English Composition 104 equivalent with a “C” grade or better. English for non-native speakers does not qualify, or
  • A Level: 1 “A” grade or better in English or 3 “B” grades or better in subjects other than Math.
