What will I learn?

The accounting curriculum provides an opportunity for students with varied interests to obtain a broad-based understanding of the role of accounting in the measurement and communication of financial and economic data. In the Bachelor's Degree in Accounting - BS program, a number of interdisciplinary courses have been designed for those students wishing a maximum overview of multinational issues in accounting and taxation as well as for those students who intend to pursue more advanced studies in accounting. Accounting students who expect to take the Certified Public Accountant professional examinations should select elective courses with the approval of and in consultation with the Chair of the Accounting Department.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students acquire the knowledge necessary for the understanding of business data and will master accounting concepts, principles, and theories.
  • Students will develop technical skills necessary to measure, analyze, and interpret economic data.
  • Students will understand internal accounting systems, controls, reports for decision making and will learn how to effectively communicate economic data.
  • Students will study professional and regulatory requirements. Additionally students will acquire the accounting foundation that enables them to pursue advanced study required for the successful completion of the CPA exam.
  • Students will pursue internships.
  • Students will have the opportunity to apply to the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program where they will gain hands-on, real world experience.

Entry requirements

For international students

Applicants must have completion of secondary or high school certificate/diploma.

You must demonstrate English language proficiency in one of the ways listed below. If you cannot demonstrate English language competency in one of these ways prior to registration, you will be given the University English Language Assessment Battery (ELAB) test upon arrival. If you pass at a satisfactory level, you may be able to begin academic classes.

  • Proof of completion of Advanced Level at the University’s English Language Institute (ELI)
  • Attainment of a satisfactory score on the University of Bridgeport’s English Language Assessment Battery (ELAB)
  • A minimum TOEFL score of 75 (IBT) for undergraduates and a minimum score of 80 (IBT) for graduates (post-graduates)
  • A minimum IELTS Band score of 6.0 for undergraduates and a minimum IELTS Band score of 6.5 for graduates (post-graduates)
  • A minimum Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) score of 53 for undergraduates and a minimum PTE Academic score of 58 for graduates (post-graduates)
  • A minimum Duolingo English Test score of 90 for undergraduates, and a minimum Duolingo English Test score of 95 for graduates
  • A grade of “C” or better from an accredited American university for one semester of college English Composition
  • An official letter certifying completion of ELS (English Language Services) Level 112
  • An official “O” level or “A” level Certificate indicating a grade of “C” or better in English
  • An EIKEN score of Grade 2A or above for undergraduates and a score of Grade Pre-1 or above for graduates
  • A score of 4 or better on the “English A” Higher Level examination in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program
  • WAEC, WASSE, CXC, etc. – Score of “C” or better on English Language exam
