What will I learn?

The accounting major provides students with the theories and procedures necessary to prepare them for the many facets of the accounting profession, such as public, managerial, tax and government accounting. Students graduating from the department are prepared to obtain employment in a competitive job market, start a business, or continue their education in graduate and professional degree programs.

If you graduate with a bachelor's degree with a major in accounting and have taken the appropriate electives, you are qualified to sit for the CPA exam in the State of Nevada. Please note that additional education is required beyond a bachelor's degree with a major in accounting to become a licensed CPA. Contact the Nevada State Board of Accountancy for more details on the CPA exam, and the additional requirements to become a licensed CPA in Nevada.

Learning outcomes

With a bachelor's degree in accounting, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the basic principles of cost and managerial accounting.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of United States income taxation.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the basic processes and control systems operated by businesses.
  • Discern ethical conflicts and provide a framework for their resolution.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the international dimensions of the accounting profession.

Entry requirements

For international students

To be admitted to an undergraduate degree program as a regular freshman student, you must be a graduate from an approved or accredited high school. You must have a 3.0 weighted GPA in the academic core courses in order to be admitted to the University of Nevada, Reno.

Verification of having met the English requirement through one of the following options: TOEFL score 61+; IELTS (must be academic version) with a score of 6.0+; Duolingo English Exam score 95+; Cambridge score of B2+.
