What will I learn?

Discover a career dedicated to helping others. Find and develop your professional strengths. Design an academic program tailored to your interests. Healthcare studies is designed for students who are interested in the healthcare field but don’t want to pursue a clinical degree, like nursing or pre-med.

As a healthcare studies student, you’ll explore the healthcare industry as a whole, with in-depth coursework in the language of healthcare, technology, writing, management, statistics, and more. You’ll discover the incredible variety of non-clinical healthcare professions to find a field that fits your skills and passions, from advocacy to case management, policy, marketing, and research. You’ll develop career skills and complete meaningful internships to help you graduate as a confident, marketable professional. Finally, you’ll collaborate with passionate and dedicated faculty who are leaders in their fields.

Healthcare Studies majors benefit from a core group of classes that provide a foundation in understanding the healthcare industry. Enhanced by an emphasis on career development with exposure to motivating healthcare employers, the core is then supported by a wide variety of electives and a mandatory minor. Electives are selected from one of several departments including social work, criminal justice, sociology, music, world languages, sport and movement science, psychology and others. Students have the choice of their minor from the many offered at Salem State. This is all designed for Healthcare Studies majors to learn through experience and observation.
