Chemistry Education, Grades 9-12

Maryville University’s School of Education prepares its students to be reflective teachers committed to one of the most critical jobs in a democracy. Maryville’s Chemistry Education program focuses on teaching grades 9-12 and prepares prospective teachers to understand the special joys and challenges of working with adolescents. Located in the heart of St. Louis, Maryville provides education students with extensive and intensive field experiences in secondary schools throughout the region.

Students who wish to teach chemistry at the high school level (grades 9-12) enter the secondary/high school teacher preparation program. The program involves extensive professional education courses with a strong grounding in content area coursework. All teacher preparation programs also involve extensive experiences in partner schools.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants should have: A high school diploma with a minimum of 22 units of credit including four units of English, three units of mathematics, two units of science, two units of social sciences (social studies) and three additional units in any of the above areas or in a foreign language; A high school grade point average of at least 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale). Required High School Coursework for full admission consideration: 4 years of English, 3 years of History of Social Science, 3 years of Math, including coursework in Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II, 3 years of Natural Science, including coursework in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

For international students

To be considered for admission, applicants should have:

  • A high school diploma with a minimum of 22 units of credit including four units of English, three units of mathematics, two units of science, two units of social sciences (social studies) and three additional units in any of the above areas or in a foreign language.
  • A high school grade point average of at least 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Freshman applicants who do not meet the criteria listed above, and GED/HiSet applicants (who are considered on a case-by-case basis) may be asked to submit additional material, come to Maryville for a personal interview, and/or complete additional testing before an admission decision is made.

Maryville University requires that students provide proof of English proficiency for study at the University. The following are acceptable means of providing proof of English proficiency:

  • TOEFL: 69 overall with no sub score lower than 15, or
  • IELTS: 6.0 with no sub score lower than 5, or
  • DET: 40, or
  • PTE ACADEMIC: 47, or
  • ELS Center: Level 112 completed with a 2.5 grade or better, or
  • U.S. University/College Study: English Composition 104 equivalent with a “C” grade or better. English for non-native speakers does not qualify, or
  • A Level: 1 “A” grade or better in English or 3 “B” grades or better in subjects other than Math.
