What will I learn?

A student seeking a Bachelor of Arts with a major in English will choose one of the four emphases described below. All candidates for this degree must complete a minor except the Education and Language & Teaching emphases. All students seeking this degree should see Requirements for All Baccalaureate Degrees and PittState Pathway Requirements for All Baccalaureate Degrees. Persons com­pleting this degree who plan to teach must also complete licensure requirements.

Core Requirements

All candidates for this degree must complete a minor, except Education and Language and Teaching emphases. English Core Requirements (17 hours) ENGL-199 Introduction to English Studies (1 hour) ENGL-202 English Grammar and Usage (3 hours) ENGL-220 World Masterpieces (3 hours) ENGL-699 Senior Seminar in English (1 hour) Select 9 hours from the following: ENGL-231 American Literature I (3 hours) ENGL-232 American Literature II (3 hours) ENGL-241 British Literature I (3 hours) ENGL-242 British Literature II (3 hours).

Emphases available: Creative Writing , English Education , Language and Teaching , Literature and Culture , Professional Writing.

Entry requirements

For international students

High School Academic Records: A minimum GPA (grade point average) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) in high school and have earned a high school diploma

International College/University Academic Records: A minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) in an accredited international post-secondary institution (college/university)

U.S. College/University Academic Records: A minimum GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) if transferring from an accredited U.S. college with at least 24 credit hours (approximately one year of college work)

English Language Requirement

TOEFL score of at least 68 (iBT) is required. In addition, a minimum score of 15 is required in each section (internet).

IELTS: Overall score of 6.0 with a minimum score of 5.0. in each band of the IELTS is required. If a lower score is earned in any of the five band scores, the overall score cannot be accepted.

PTE: Overall score of 47.

Application Deadline: Fall Semester – June 1st, Spring Semester – October 15th.
