The department boasts one of the most prestigious and innovative programs in the country. Students with an interest in the Spanish and Portuguese languages, and/or in the literatures and cultures of Spain and Portugal, Spanish America, and Brazil, can take a wide range of interdisciplinary courses with a world-class faculty.
REQUIREMENTS (3 courses): 1) SPAN-UA 200 Critical Approaches. 2) SPAN-UA 300 The Iberian Atlantic 3) SPAN-UA 310 Cultural History of Spain OR relevant Core course (CORE-UA xxx: Spain) COURSE ELECTIVES (6 courses) Students choose 6 additional courses from the department course offerings, or from any other department that offers relevant courses (Art History, History, Politics, Music). Go to the department’s website for up to date course offerings and course descriptions. Courses taught in Spanish in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese carry as a pre-requisite “Critical Approaches” (SPAN-UA 200).
LANGUAGE ELECTIVES Students may select ONE language elective in place of an elective course to be used to satisfy the 6 required courses for the major. Languages include: Catalan, Gallego, Basque/Euskara, Hebrew, Latin and Arabic, or any advanced level Portuguese. Advanced language electives CANNOT be used to satisfy this major. Advanced language electives include courses in conversation, techniques of translation, and creative writing.
